I've always prefered the stew metaphor for NYC. Definite merging of flavors, but ingredients still remain distinct.

In Canada, Canadians were often very careful to describe the US as a melting pot and Canada as a cultural mosaic.
I was recently informed by my friend's 8 year old son that America is not a melting pot, it is a salad -- all of the ingredients are still themselves, but together make something new and great.
