I go to an Aveda salon, but it's the school and not only super cheap, but no tipping allowed. And the Aveda salons in the area are all owned by the same dude and he pays his people well and doesn't allow tipping in his salons. My cut and color is usually around $50.
In LA, it was totally $150 + tip for cut and color, but I love love love E and would pay whatever she told me. Good times hanging out on the back patio of the Ventura Blvd salon she worked, smoking while my color was setting.
Sigh.
Stylists love my Feria color, too, sara! I like it also; I just long for that really vivid yet classy looking red. The color of red that can rock out, or go to a career function and you look supersharp, not all manic panic.
I color my own hair, and Pete trims my bangs into the perfect batwing point with edging clippers. For the once a year I get my hair trimmed, I go to my friend Anna at whatever salon she's at. I usually tip $5 on the $20 cost, and bring her coffee.

Yep, yes, this. And yet E did my reception hair as a wedding present and has given me free in-between dry cuts many times. She's a gem, and I love her to pieces. Thank you SO MUCH for recommending her. I swear most of the people I know go to her now.
Funny story, Aims, but she now has BOOBS. Decided to save up for a boob job, and she looks great. (She looked great before, but she works in LA in the beauty industry, so I get it. She went from an A to a C/D.)

You know, if she's going to the trouble of getting one installed, you'd think she'd at least go with an MP3.
I am so bereft about my stylist. Our friend Ernst (no, really) was my stylist in Indiana and he was so good he could do anything and it looked amazing, so I would let him play. He would refuse to do stuff I wanted sometimes and he was always right. I kept going to him all the way through Kansas and New Mexico, but I figured by the time I was in my third state from moving away I should find a new stylist. But I always hate everyone. They always give me the youngest girl, and she is always horrified by my butch or punk cuts and tries to femme it up and then I look horrid. Like a mom haircut gone terribly wrong. I miss Ernst. And I still see him twice a year. I should just go back to him. I just started feeling bad that I just visited him to get my hair cut. But really. It`s his fault for being so damn good no one in the country could replace him.
I need a haircut so bad
Aren't you due for a San Francisco trip?
Poor Liese. I went back to my old stylist because her cuts were always the best, but this last one was just so-so.
I just tried a new stylist, and went back for the dry cut the other day (free in between cuts). She was a little cheaper than my old one, but I picked her based on yelp reviews, and because I wasn't feeling the last few cuts I'd gotten from the other woman.
But I always tip 20% to haircuts and massages and nails. I just figure that's gotta be a decent tip--I don't want to be the customer they bitch about! The thing I get puzzled about is the "free" cuts in between (my old stylist did them too). Sometimes it's just a bit of bang or neck trim, but for example this time, she did a little more, since it had been the first cut and she wanted to see how it was going. I tipped $10 (I think the original cut was $70 plus tip?) but couldn't decide if that was good or bad.
I got the insomnia fairy tonight. I hope everyone else is sleeping (at least, during the appropriate time slot in their time zone).
Damn, it's 2 a.m.
