I get about a $25 haircut at a Beauty Brands (about 40 minutes), and I tip $5. On my $14 brow wax (about 7 mins.), I tip $2.
I am a polite, cooperative prompt customer; there's no massages or anything, and that's what I can afford. If I come off as a cheapskate, well, I'm cheap because I'm broke. I tip a few dollars more if I get a terrific, nice stylist who makes me look fab. I have easy, easy hair, so if it's basic, I tip basic.
I tip $10 for a 60 minute massage, unless they talk too much or start late and end on time.
I've never had a shampoo person, so I've never had to tip. I would find it weird to tip someone I assume is making minimum for doing their 5 minute job.
I always tip valets and housekeeping in hotels. They do heavy/gross stuff for shit pay, and tips are part of their salary.
ita, I totally teared up too! Unexpected, and I felt like a weenie.
It came as a big surprise to me that people were expected to tip massage therapists. I think it was on this board during the last tipping discussion that I found out that massage therapists working in a salon/spa environment were expecting tips. My massage therapists have been trained professionals working in a para-medical sense. They've gotten paid at least a dollar a minute to do their work.
Shampoo people at the salon give awesome head massages. I totally tip for that. Especially when I almost fall asleep as a result. I get confused when it is busy and my stylist does it, but I add it to her tip (Plus now she does a shoulder and neck massage pre-cut. LOVE.)
When I first started seeing THE BESTEST MASSAGE THERAPIST EVAH she was working at a Massage Envy type place. They had little envelopes for your to leave your tip.
Then she moved to a chiropractic office and her price is just a skosh higher than before. BUT she has a little sign that says "no tips please". Overall, the cost went down a bit for me. I adore her beyond all reason and need to find a way to afford a massage after tournament.
Unexpected, and I felt like a weenie.
Weenie solidarity!

In LA that doesn't have anything to do with being para-medical. That just means you're not a bargain basement strip mall, at least in my neighbourhood.
And now I'm watching a sitcom. This is supposed to make me feel better after unanticipated emotional reaction. Garrett Dillahunt is...interesting.
If I get a massage from a stylist, that totes counts as making me look great, and I add on!
But I can afford basic service, so I go to a basic salon. Ergo, 15-20% tips. I think that is reasonable.
Erin, I've followed this woman from Hair Cuttery for $10 to a middling salon to the fancypants salon she's at now simply because I tell her"whatever" and what she does makes my hair look good even when I don't bother with styling it [link] and it grows out well. I think I'd budget for her even if she got into the $100 range (though I'd cringe.) I don't to lose her.
Yeah, if I found a stylist I liked that much, I'd follow her/him pretty much anywhere.
