Great and powerful hivemind, please speak to me of portable air conditioning units. A window unit is unpossible here and ... I am beginning to be really willing to buy a portable unit. Anyone have recs for ones to look at and ones to avoid?

It's less than 900 sq feet total and I am totes willing to carve that into either a 300 sq foot or 200 sq ft area. And I don't mind making it a near cave during the heatwaves either. So I'm not asking for it to bring a miracle. Just drop the temp ten or fifteen degrees at the worst of times.

The main thing you need to worry about with a portable unit is having a place to vent. For 900 square feet you could probably get away with a pretty small one.

But the portable units aren't really as efficient because the venting often is a problem. We have one that we use in the front room when necessary and it runs, but doesn't cool as well as the window units we have in the den, which is a larger space because of venting.

My neighbor gave a me a rec for a relatively safe/enviro-friendly paint stripper (it is paint stripper, after all): "Back to Nature" Multi Strip. She says it eats through a bazillion layers if you leave it on long enough. She also wraps everything in saran wrap so it works longer.
