Current Saints owner Tom Benson acquired the franchise in 1985, and hired Jim Finks as general manager and Jim Mora as head coach. That combination provided the Saints with their first-ever winning record and playoff appearance, going 12-3 in 1987, which had one fewer game than normal due to a players' strike.
Okay, it's older than '87 but I don't think Saints fans had much to chant about before then.

So far, the answer is orange, black and white in banded and other patterns.
I remember it as part of the "When the Saints Go Marching In" song during the era of Bum Phillips.
NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon are dead. So are the rockets being designed to take them there — that is, if President Barack Obama gets his way.
When the White House releases his budget proposal Monday, there will be no money for the Constellation program that was supposed to return humans to the moon by 2020. The troubled and expensive Ares I rocket that was to replace the space shuttle to ferry humans to space will be gone, along with money for its bigger brother, the Ares V cargo rocket that was to launch the fuel and supplies needed to take humans back to the moon.
There will be no lunar landers, no moon bases, no Constellation program at all.
In their place, according to White House insiders, agency officials, industry executives and congressional sources familiar with Obama's long-awaited plans for the space agency, NASA will look at developing a new "heavy-lift" rocket that one day will take humans and robots to explore beyond low Earth orbit. But that day will be years — possibly even a decade or more — away.

I remember it from my time there, and my last NFL season in NOLA was '83. The Saints started out something like 7-1, and the line was "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?" There was even a song that got some airplay.
The Saints ended up something like 8-8, and they missed the playoffs. Still, a vast improvement over the '80 team (my freshman year), which went 1-15 and inspired the bagheads.
The NFL very well may have trademarked it on the sly. Sometimes organizations will trademark stuff "just in case". However, if they have not defended the trademark previously, it weakens their case.
One crafty Twitter user created a shirt mocking the NFL on the Web site customink.com. In yellow lettering, the front of the black shirt reads: "Who exactly is it that states they are going to defeat the football team from New Orleans?" The back taunts: "Cease and desist this."
Well, according the article Dana linked to, the NFL is saying the Saints themselves hold the trademark.
I remember a "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Who dat? Who dat?" song playing on the radio in NOLA in the early 2000s.
