I think there was something about similar effects in Predictably Irrational - iirc, the explanation had to do with wanting to make sure your competitors didn't get it more than wanting to get a fair price for yourself.

Damn, it is cold and windy out. I am under-dressed. We're not having the day we planned, uncle g is tending mac who refused to leave the house. I am supposed to be out doing something enjoyable. So far I've got coffee and donuts and sat reading at D&D, but now I have no idea what to do. The mani-pedi place in my hood is closed. It is ick to be walking around in. The library is closed. Ideas?
