Is fic a defining characteristic of bandom?
Do you mean, do you have to read bandom fic to be in bandom? I don't think so. Do you have to read fic to be in any fandom? I define being in a fandom as being, well, fannish about something. Looking up background info. Knowing about side projects. Getting the "special edition" of the cd, or wishing you could.
I've been washing towels for my yoga studio in exchange for free yoga so I've been going pretty regularly the last 6 months or so.
I've just been doing it at home with some beginner DVDs. I wanted to see if I liked it before dropping money on classes.
I've been trying to find something that I enjoy doing in addition to going to the gym, because I find the gym so deeply boring.
What smonster said. I think a lot of the fans have no idea fic is even out there, and what I've seen of the fic usually comes from writers who were already writing in other fandoms.
Also, P-C, they didn't use the long-winded titles on the second album, and don't appear to be using them on the third, either.
Oh, but I love the long-winded titles! Fall Out Boy has a song called "Champagne for my Real Friends, Real Pain for My Sham Friends," which I think is brilliant.
I do like "Nine in the Afternoon." I also like their version of "This Is Halloween."
It confused me when they lost the exclamation point, and I didn't take it out in my mp3s because I wanted them to sort together properly. Although if there was a big lineup change between the first and second albums, then maybe they should sort differently? I AM ANAL ABOUT THESE THINGS. It's like Santogold changing to Santigold. Should the songs from the album where she was Santogold still be Santogold? Should everything be Santigold? Should everything be Santogold? I DON'T KNOW.
Yeah, I think fic sort of extended into bandom and not the other way 'round.
It makes me wonder where else fic will go. Which professional sports? Olympic fic? Politicians (of course, we have the tabs for that...)
Personally I'm not very comfortable with RPF. There is a careful vetting process before I will read it.
It makes me wonder where else fic will go.
I just discovered that there is Threadless shirt fic.
Is fic a defining characteristic of bandom?
My answer is much the same as smonster's. In fact, I resisted reading bandom fic for a very long time, and the only bandom fic I read with any regularity is the wacky AU stuff. (Give me fic about MCR and vampires, and I will be a happy girl.)
But no, I don't think that fic is a defining characteristic of bandom. Not by a long shot.
It makes me wonder where else fic will go.
Everywhere. It already has. There was GCS fic *before* Fay started writing her (adorable! brilliant!) story. "Don't Google Yourself" is a very good rule.
Polter- the ! is back!
Oh good! But then...do songs from the second album NOT contain the !??
I wonder what Godspeed You Black Emperor! fans do.
