Uh, speaking of immigration, here's an interesting article about people going around New York City to study endangered languages like Vlashki, Garifuna, Mamuju....

Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, pandas, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
But there are people who enjoy starting shit in communities they don't really belong in
You decided Shari doesn't belong here? That's a bit authoritative, isn't it?
Ok, I should have written "are not really established members of" But then I suppose that looks like I don't trust ANY newbies and that's not really what I meant either.
Look, I love how freaking smart you people are, and your breadth and depth of knowledge. When I perceive a lack of respect for that knowledge, it gets my hackles up.
And I know Buffistas are all about the debates, but it didn't feel like good faith to me (or erika or DJ) so we called it out.
And now I'm stuck staring at cupcakes the rest of the afternoon.
Thanks, Theo!
and our whole first step thing is try to resolve in thread
That's true.
Okay, gotta go teach.

Her user ID is 244. She posted on WX. She has a stor. Let's not get all "membership guidelines." That way lies madness and kerfuffle. Let's just not.
She has a stor.
I love that you included this! I miss the stors. (I miss when Tom W. changed his stor to various tomato heads. I miss the stor montage of the BTVS/Angel characters, especially bloody-fist!Fred.)
Oh, Tom's stors! Hilarious and I had forgotten them.

The same thing happened on a small scale in the Midwest fifty years ago. Scandinavian dialects that had existed in isolated valleys for millenia were being overwhelmed by the homogenizing effects of radio and TV. Elderly Scandinavians had difficulty remembering what was their childhood language and what was the general language, because the the two had been mixing for fifty years.
But those who had left for America as yound adults had been listening to radio and TV, and and interacting with other humans in English, so their childhood language was preserved. Scandinavian liguists sought them out and wrote dissertations on e.g. "Icebox Norwegian" that preserved the 19th century dialects.
