I always think the best way to proceed is to use the pronouns the individual person prefers, but fandom_wank isn't exactly set up for that.

I totally don't know. Not doing it helps delineate the time period, but doing it maintains continuity. I assume everyone's preference on that varies, but if you're talking about someone not present, you often might not know their preference.
There should be a handbook. That would make things so much easier.

I think you might be right. It seems like the big fandoms have a lot more to play with in terms of made-up cultures, settings, languages, and what not.
