I didn't think it was one of the better TDS shows last night, but I thought the book in the interview sounded interesting. I worry about the lack of fiscal responsibility in the government. One of the things I liked about the Clinton administration was some return to sane fiscal policy. Hard to say with Obama, like they said in the interview, he started with about the worst set of cards possible.

I don't think 2003 was the start of the problem though. I think it was the Reagan administration, until then debt as percentage of GDP had been going down. His combination of tax cuts and war-time military spending really kicked off the debt building.

I'm curious about the Walker dude says about dealing with health-care costs.

Possibly something is wrong in my life that I find fiscal policy interesting.

At least it's actually important. Unlike the casts of VH-1 dating shows....

Yeah, it's ridiculous that "tax and spend" is still used as an insult against Democrats, when the Reagan Republican model is don't tax, spend more, worry about it later.

Andrew Sullivan has a great one of NPH checking out Mickey Rourke (not like that!)

NPH tweeted that with a joke about being ready to fight.

My issue with the author on TDS last night, and others who are obsessing about the deficit right now, is that they're ignoring the lesson of 1937, when FDR decided to listen to the deficit worriers and cut back on federal spending. This landed the US in an even worse hole than we had dug ourselves out of from 1933 to '36, and the only way we got out was the federal spending for WWII.

Digby has been all over these Pete Peterson people for some time, and she has pointed out that progressive government is going to involve some federal spending at this point in our economy. The deficit will grow some, especially if we can't get ourselves out of the Middle East anytime soon.

I'm at my new desk. Everything is on the opposite side. I know I'm going to throw trash in the recycling bin and bang my knuckles against the filing cabinet that isn't supposed to be there.
