Happy Birthdays.
It is a lovely day, a wee chilly if you're in the shade or catch a breeze, but lovely with shades up and windows slightly open. I am folding laundry, have sorted mac's books with a pile for him to go through and decide what to keep, will cover some oversized books with book covers in a bit, and then will hopefully have time to do a few touch-up painting/paint removal things. Rather than taking a full day to do these little improvements on my place, I am just going to try to do one or two every weekend. I am sure than not one of these things alone will be the difference in someone wanting to buy the place, but they are things that bug me, and therefore, I think, worth it to spend a little time on while I am still living here.
Ok, now I'm feeling kind of guilty for upbraiding Sam Sifton: [link]
Ha ha ha! That was awesome.
Also hilarious: I ate ramps last night.
Speaking of spring veggies, I had these hard green things in 2002 (at 59 Wall, I think) and haven't had them since, and have been wondering what the hell they were. I finally saw [link] this week and they were fiddlehead ferns! Memorable texture, for sure.
This semi-hippie kid's cookbook I have (from my childhood) has a whole thing on fiddlehead ferns, but I still have never eaten them.
Those are pretty common in Canada but now that I think about it I don't know that I've ever seen them here.
Huh, until just now I thought ramps and fiddlehead ferns were synonymous. Now I know (and knowing is half the battle.)

Just coming into season now, I think. They are a specialty of New Brunswick.
Bon, were they a little slimy?
