It's all about context. Though people bitch about the criminal justice system and all its flaws it is interested in more than the cut and dried illegality and is looking for a glimmer that somebody is redeemable.
The current case I'm working on involves a fairly horrific crime but the defendants are more doofy than malign.
It all unfolds with this horrible inevitability but there's less actual evil than you'd expect.
