Well, I kinda understand. Hil has been treating the adviser as she would wish to be treated, like an adult--allowing him time to respond to requests, asking rather than telling, giving him the benefit of the doubt. This doesn't work on him, obviously. He's a douche.
She is going to have to start doing things like showing up at times not her meeting time to make sure he is there and pinning him down. Saying, for example, I need you to do this and this. I will be back here in two days to pick thje work up from you and if he doesn't have it done at that time say "I can wait." She has to say things like "I understand that you don't like my style of writing, but others do and I am going to stick with it for now. I only want to go over the math from now on."
He told me that I've got to take control and make my advisor do the stuff he's supposed to do
WHAT?!?!?!?!
You might need a new therapist. If he somehow thinks you can control someone else's behavior...
I get what you are saying Scrappy -- except that she has been told by a number of the people at the university that this is how he behaves.
She can control her reaction, she can't make him do the work. Esp. since no one at the university will back her up.
This is clearly how he behaves, but I think she can vary her approach to get more of what she needs from him. She can never get him to be reliable or predictable, but she can put a limit on his time-wasting obsession with her writing (whicc we all know is already good, so fuck him) during their sessions and get what math help he can provide. That won't happen unless she puts the hammer down, because, as we all know, the guy is a douche.

Did he say that he would provide you with an iron-clad alibi for when you take his advice and use a tazer on your advisor? Because really, I don't see any other way of controlling that jerk.
I'm not sure how much Hil can do because his general mode of operation is to not answer or not respond to an email and not show up. And there are no consequences.
::aims Vortex at Hil's adviser, waits for thermonuclear explosion::
Oh, please let me know when I should pop the popcorn. This should be beautiful.

Anybody else go to a 9 to 5 kinda place with this? Cuz I'm thinking, yeah, maybe tie him up in a basement, and only give him food and water when he does something worth rewarding.
When he doesn't? Take his bucket away.
javachik - congratulations on the approval for your company's product. It sounds like it will relieve a lot of pain for a lot of people.
Thanks, Windsparrow, I hope so.
javachik, I remember seeing something a month or so ago (actually, maybe 2 or 3) about the Qutenza patch. (In one of our journals, we have a section about new products, which is put together from press releases and such. And one of them was about Qutenza, and its efficacy.)
