Zen- yes, vodka works great on upholstery. 1 part vodka/1 part water, spritz till moist but not soaking, allow to dry. repeat if necessary. that's also how i "cleaned" carpeted cat furniture before bringing it into my home. Kitties don't need toys that smell like other kitties.
And yes, i still have a job, just at a lower salary level and with a few months of feeling like a leper for failing to make the next step up. And i can't train at fire dispatch without police dispatch certification...so it leaves me stuck on phones 10 hrs a night for at least a year before i can try again. Mostly the hurt is just failing significantly for the first time in my life (outside of romantic relationships). i do not like the knowledge that i failed at something, even if i can try again after a year. This is, apparently, a very common feeling at my workplace. I'm starting to think the training dept is staffed with sadists.
I am finally released and will be heading home as soon as Pix gets here.
Erin_O, take this year to reflect on what you need to succeed at your next chance at bat. Plan. Scheme. Mentally train. Think of those tough SM sequences when calling a show. You didn't get those on the first whack. But if you can do JD ACC, you can do anything. And you not only did it, you did it for multiple years. In the meantime. Relax. Recuperate. I think a large part of it is that patients who are ready to be released are (almost always) by definition the healthiest in the hospital, and therefore a pretty low priority unless the hospital is short on rooms.
Even while I spending quite a bit of time sitting with very unhealthy patients, everything short of hauling out the crash cart seemed to be a pretty low priority. And frankly, from the outside of the hospital it's easier to see why that's the case, but when you're the one in the hospital, NSM.

Totally. It's really frustrating just wanting an answer, let alone morphine for a loved one who's in pain, and the staff being unable to appear with it (the answer, morphine) within 60 seconds. Realistically, I know they're understaffed and overworked, and they have multiple patients with numerous, often complex, needs, and every patient's needs are important. I respect and am often amazed at what healthcare professionals can do, but when it's my loved one who needs something, then I wonder what in the HELL is taking so long.
Hospitals are so freaking random. I feel bad paging a nurse for a blanket, but they're very nice about it. But when it's my IV that's infiltrated an no one answers three pages and fluid is pumping into the muscle and I have to work out how to disconnect myself and go stumbling into the hallway, I wonder if it was someone and their blankets.
A lot of the time, however, I wonder why they bother giving time estimates, because they are so random. That doctor that was supposed to see me in a few minutes today never ever did show, despite the assurances of three nurses.

At the grocery store today, and old lady complimented me on being frugal when she noticed me pick up a can of Del Monte tomatoes, put it down, and then pick up a can of store-brand tomatoes and put that one in my cart. It was a bit weird.
