I'm so sorry for the pain this situation is causing you Pix, but I completely agree with Barb.
Pix, that sounds like crappy, generic, "we're saying this because it would take too much effort to give thoughtful, considered reasons," talk, babe. I know it's so hard not to, but please, try not to take it personally.
Stuff like this sucks beyond measure and is so rarely ever personal. In the universe of excuses, roughly 98% are simply convenient and insensitive. That doesn't help, in the face of the on-going sense of loss dogging your door, but my wish for you would be to take whatever percentage of feeling shitty you have that is connected to doubting yourself off your heart. It doesn't belong there.
