Ah, smonster. I'm so sorry. But it sounded like the best thing to do.
Brenda--I guess it's not an option to not have on Macs anymore, but it's certainly been an option on PCs for a while. I think she's on her third webcam-enabled laptop. She lives by video-conferencing.

I left my comment on the boing boing site. My peripheral webcam lights up when in use, but I keep it covered and tucked away when it's not anyway (am professionally paranoid).
My netbook's built-in webcam has no indicator about being on or not.
And I would kick the school's ass, as a parent, if they did this to my kid.
Remind me to fully check out any school-provided computers in the future.
That's the hardest part of caring for animals; you did it with kindness and love and didn't prolong her misery by shying away from it. And her last days were so much better for being spent with you.
