I pronounce them "fo-yerrr" and "nitch" if it's a little tucked-away corner of a room, and "neesh" if it's a metaphorical place that one finds themselves in life.

Botetourt County pronounces its name body-tot. I tried pronouncing it as if it were French and no one knew what I meant.
I call that Tennessee Syndrome, Zenkitty. Lafayette, TN is pronounced la-FAY-ett, Milan, TN is MY-lan, Cairo is KAY-row.
I'm betting there are others, but those are the ones I can recall off the top of my head.
In Colorado, Pueblo is pronounced "Pyu-eb-lo," and Buena Vista is "Byoona Vista," or just "Byoonie."

Although I did run into a lady a few months ago with the last name spelled "Boucher," who looked at me funny when I called her "Mrs. Booo-sheeaaee" and told me that her name is Mrs. Butcher, thank you very much.

That's the one I've heard most often...that's wrong. Vonnie has the correct pronunciation, at least from a French-Canadian perspective.
The one that I've heard the bearers of give up on is "Fournier" which gets pronounced For-nee-or more than the correct For-nee-ay.
The one that always confused freshmen at Tulane who were not from Louisiana was a building called Fortier, pronounced for-SHAY.
