Our wings are not tired.

Per the Palm Beach County School Board website:

President Barack Obama’s message to students

The United States Department of Education has notified all schools of President Barack Obama’s message to students to be broadcasted at 12 noon, September 8th, 2009.

1. Accordingly, the Palm Beach County School District will air and record the President’s message.
2. Teachers are encouraged to use this broadcast to reinforce existing lessons where possible.
3. All school personnel are reminded not to inject political comments and/or political opinions to students in light of Palm Beach School District policy prohibiting “political” messaging to students.
4. Parents, who object to this broadcast for personal reasons, may submit a written request to the school to excuse their student(s) from this broadcast.

Thank you for your attention and support in this matter.

This was copy and paste. The good: My kids will see the broadcast. The bad: broadcasted? That just doesn't seem right to me.

“Not dead yet!”

This is the St. Johns County School District:

We will be making President Obama’s address available for students at 12:00. Knowing that timing and logistics will make this difficult in some circumstances, we will make a concerted effort to provide access as requested. This message is scheduled to last 15 minutes. Tuesday is a regular school day and will be treated as such.

It is our understanding that a transcript of the speech will be released on Monday. If so, it will be posted immediately on the district web site. We are not recommending that our teachers use the DOE-provided materials as we have not had the chance to review them properly.

Parents who do not wish for their children to participate may write a note to their 4th period teacher excusing them from the presentation. These students will be relocated to the gymnasium for the duration of the speech.

Frankly, I'm shocked they're broadcasting it and being supportive about it.

Now tagless for your comfort.

This is the fucking President of the United States of America? Why is this even an issue here??? Have people lost their fucking minds?

Yes.

That's encouraging. With the news showing so many places not broadcasting it, I was all ready to go get pushy and stuff. Obama is very popular with the students in our HS.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

I'm pretty sure that we watched President Bush make a speech on TV in school when I was in sixth grade. My parents disagreed with him on practically everything, but they didn't object to me watching him make a speech because, well, he was the president. Presidents do things like make speeches. And pretty much all he was saying is America is great, stay in school, users are losers. Possibly not exactly in those words. I also remember Nancy Reagan on an episode of Diff'rent Strokes telling kids to Just Say No To Drugs.

Sorry. Freaked out for a second. I mean, I wouldn't relish George W. Bush reading My Pet Goat to my kids but I wouldn't keep them home from school if he was going to do it.

I respect the office. OK, I'll admit I had some fantasies about spitting in Dubya's face but I would have NEVER followed through with it.

I'm just boggled by this stupidity.

“Not dead yet!”

Remember, Cash, where I'm concerned this is the same county where Abby was called a terrorist lover for simply saying that her parents supported Obama.

And considering our country voted something like 87% percent red in November, I'm amazed there hasn't been more of a public outcry from the whackjobs in terms of insisting that kids stay home, blah, blah, blah.

Yes, Cashmere. That describes my feelings as well. I was worried when I checked the county website because I knew I would have to don the battle dress if they weren't showing the broadcast to my students. Phew! I dislike that it was a concern in the first place.

Yeah, I just don't get people. But that's not new.

I'm staying in tonight, my first night of unemployment, even though I want to go have drinks because I have no drinking buddies. BUT, I do have the Vividcon DVDs from Katie, plus I hope there's a new Psych.

Tomorrow, I'm going to visit my sister at the beach until Monday morning. The rest of Monday, I'll mentally prepare for New Work on Tuesday. Well, not all day.
