Gronklies.
How does one dispose of a car that CAN be fixed, but is too EXPENSIVE to fix? My car's alternator died on Saturday, a replacement part for a 99 VW GTI is $700, and that's more money than I have (or will have, if I want to pay rent in 2 weeks) - so I can't drive it and I can't afford to make it drivable. I want to sell it or donate it or something. Get it OUT of my life, turn off my insurance, and walk everywhere from now on. (I can do that - I live on Capitol Hill.)
A donation to a charity should work, right? They'll take it away for free, and then fix it and sell it.
eta: And you'll get a tax deduction!
Also, have you looked into buying a used alternator from a junkyard?
I fell into the Not Always Right rabbit hole and may never return.
Hey, Wednesday's high has been downgraded to 88! Woo hoo slightly shorter heat wave!
OH, SH, you might want to advertise your car on Craigslist as a "mechanic's special", explaining what needs to be done to fix it.
I am actually doing work. Invoice detective work on an account that has not been paid since 10/2008. Vendor FAIL for not contact anyone sooner. They were sending invoices to an employee that was fired in October, never noticed the emailed were getting bounced.
99 VW GTI
That's a pretty nice car, your insurance may let you suspend coverage if you aren't driving it and that would give you time to sell it. If it's not running, you're not going to get a lot of money, but you can probably get something.
Lots of health-ma for your brother Kathy. Scary.
Kathy, sending lots of healthma to your brother and calm ma to you and the rest of your family. Are you there with him?
You could sell the car on Craig's List and say that it has a broken alternator. Reduce the asking price by $700 and see if you get any takers. You can only take the tax deduction if you itemize, so you may not want to bother.
