Also, you can tell it's not gonna have a happy ending when the main guy's all bumpy.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Capoeira, some versions of kung fu, depending on the school. But the adrenalin rush is more intense the more intense the potential jeopardy, I find, and that pays off in the aftereffects.

But I can start there and work my way up to knowing that I am going to be hit? I mean, I live with gravity and it's mean to me but I am conditioned.

Get bigger tattoos?

Not until there is something that I *need* bigger. Really, I'd rather be hit in the face than get a random tattoo. I am fine with random bruisese, less so tattoos. Heck, I am used to random bruises. Some quite impressive.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

But I can start there and work my way up to knowing that I am going to be hit?

Emmett's been doing it for a couple months and he hasn't been hit yet. He's had to hit the floor a lot (they spend a lot of time practicing falls and scrambling away), and he's done a lot of punching and kicking. At his school, they don't do bouts until green belt level.

OTOH, Emmett and his friends hit each other pretty hard on a daily basis at school. (His frenemy Kolby, unprovoked, stomped on his instep. So when Kolby wasn't looking Emmett punched him in the kidney. That's like daily 13 y.o. boy stuff.)

Honey, gravity doesn't really love you. I know it says it does, but it's telling you LIES.

Okay, good point. I just always assume people have a list of tattoos they're waiting to get. (At last count it's something like 7 for me, possibly 8 if I can talk Pete into the design.)

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Emmett's been doing it for a couple months and he hasn't been hit yet.

Does he have to hold shields for people to hit? In my experience, people who don't like getting hit don't like the impact of that either.

Definitely. Lots of that.

Depending on who you hold for (and I held for lots of big guys) that can have as much or more impact than getting hit sparring.

If only I wouldn't test him so, he'd stop hurting me? I know it's my fault, he says so.

Oh yeah. We were doing some pad work tonight. Yowza.

Karate is the only time I have stuck with any kind of exercise for over a year and really enjoyed it. I think it is the combo of learning and sweating.
