Death is your art. You make it with your hands day after day. That final gasp, that look of peace. And part of you is desperate to know: What's it like? Where does it lead you? And now you see, that's the secret. Not the punch you didn't throw or the kicks you didn't land. She really wanted it. Every Slayer has a death wish. Even you.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

Good lord. I saw someone twitter something nonspecific like "how horrible about McKenzie Phillips!" and just assumed, you know, dead. I'm more horrified now.

I’m responsible for my own happiness? I can’t even be responsible for my own breakfast! (Bojack Horseman)

She also said I'm a "top candidate". They can't make offers to more than one person at a time, right?

I don't think so, unless you decline or something hinky happens with the background check. They probably have to be cagey till that's through, and if they don't have a salary offer decided then... basically, she's telling you, you got the job, just sit tight till we get our shit together and can make you a formal offer.

That's my read on the situation, anyway.

ION, a student brought me a taffy apple and it was yum!

Oh, that reminds me--it's Dan's Caramel Apple time!! When Dennis Hastert was the Speaker, he would bring them to his fellow Congresscritters as a bribe/treat. They don't sell them after Halloween--I must go down to Joliet soon.

(They also make g-shaft candy. Childhood memories--yum!)

Answer: More than you'll ever be paid in publishing.

Sad but true. But it was a serious question that I would love to have opinions on.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

But it was a serious question that I would love to have opinions on.

I don't have a serious answer! All I can offer is mocking quips.

I don't have a serious answer!

I know but I figured that someone with more office negotiating experience than we have could answer it.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

megan, you made me go looking for info about NYC, where I learned that median household income in NYC in 2000 was about $38K, but Manhattan is mad varied:

This phenomenon is especially true of Manhattan, which in 2005 was home to the wealthiest U.S. census, tract with a household income of $188,697, as well as the poorest, where household income was $9,320

Median household income in my Queens neighborhood is about $42K, apparently. My personal income is higher than the median, but nowhere near the fancy Manhattan people.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

I would not expect a single young professional to make less than $24,000. It would depend a lot on what profession, and where they were working.

I don't know that it's really relevant to salaries, since the range of incomes is generall huge and based on the actual jobs. Like, office cleaners probably have more similar salaries no matter where they are, while there is a huge range from cleaner to CEO in my office building.
