Right. Piano. Because that's what we used to kill that big demon that one time. No, wait. That was a rocket launcher.

Answer: More than you'll ever be paid in publishing.

Sad but true. But it was a serious question that I would love to have opinions on.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

But it was a serious question that I would love to have opinions on.

I don't have a serious answer! All I can offer is mocking quips.

I don't have a serious answer!

I know but I figured that someone with more office negotiating experience than we have could answer it.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

megan, you made me go looking for info about NYC, where I learned that median household income in NYC in 2000 was about $38K, but Manhattan is mad varied:

This phenomenon is especially true of Manhattan, which in 2005 was home to the wealthiest U.S. census, tract with a household income of $188,697, as well as the poorest, where household income was $9,320

Median household income in my Queens neighborhood is about $42K, apparently. My personal income is higher than the median, but nowhere near the fancy Manhattan people.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

I would not expect a single young professional to make less than $24,000. It would depend a lot on what profession, and where they were working.

I don't know that it's really relevant to salaries, since the range of incomes is generall huge and based on the actual jobs. Like, office cleaners probably have more similar salaries no matter where they are, while there is a huge range from cleaner to CEO in my office building.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

basically, she's telling you, you got the job, just sit tight till we get our shit together and can make you a formal offer.

There was also a bit of "don't get your expectations too high with the salary," but there's nothing I can do about that until an offer comes in.

Well, the median income here is $68,000, which skews the comparison quite a bit.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

If the median household income in your area is X, what is a reasonable salary expectation for a single young professional to have?

Depends on the demographics of your area, doesn't it? If they're all young professionals, then somewhere between X/2 and X. Older professionals, something less than that. If your neighbors mostly work at Walmart, more than X, maybe.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
