I am still really bothered by a waitress at the nom-automated Automat. I am confused

The couple of times I went to an automat, in NY in the 70's, there was also a cafeteria line for things that didn't really work in automat format (hot food). Still no waitresses, but maybe they were used in place of the cafeteria line in some restaurants.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

One of the commenters on this Smithsonian article remembers being an automat waitress, but doesn't go into detail (i.e. whether she was serving customers or just refilling the cases from behind the glass). Maybe some locations also had cooked-to-order food?

Argggh, just got into it with a poster on another board who doesn't understand why product placement ads wouldn't work on Agent Carter. I mean, I'm sure Ovaltine would be thrilled to have increased brand recognition in today's market, but they're not going to be financing an hour of primetime on ABC every week.

Danger is my middle name, only I spell it R. u. t. h. - Tina Belcher.

I like Carter and Jarvis but not anyone else. I'm finding it hard to watch.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Man, I can remember somebody telling me about waitresses at automats but now I can't find supporting documentation. My unreliable memory asserts that they were a thing, though. Audrey Meadow's played an Automat waitress in That Touch of Mink, so that's something, I suppose.

brillig

I wonder if any database managers are wondering at the uptick in hits on Automats.

I guess a resurgence wouldn't fly between modern day health codes and the way some people behave in restaurants. I always wanted to eat in one.

Cats to become a rabbit should gather immediately now here

I have been googling too, because I just want to know about the waitress thing. It sounds like they had cashiers and also people running around refilling the machines. This one looks like a normal diner, with dessert in the automat part.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

I ate in an automat as a kid. 60s. Don't remember if it was in California or during a trip to New Jersey. Given existence of vending machines that sell burrito, and the existence of buffets/salad bars don't think health codes would prevent revival. Think that they were made oboselete by the dim sum system where you are dharged by the number and color of empty plates. Same labor savings, lower capital cost. and still get chared for what you eat rather than having an all u can eat system. Seen it in regular cafeterias, not just din sum places I know classjc dim sum is they bring a cart around, but I've seen dim sung done cafeteria style.

A cafeteria with snack machines is essentially the same thing as the automats I've been to. And the food was just as bad. (Worse, actually. The CC where I teach has a culinary department, so the cafeteria has some really good student cooks.)
