To understand what happened at the diner, we shall use Mr. Papaya! This is upsetting because he's the friendliest of fruits.

I thought she broke in for that.

Really? I don't remember that at all.

Huh.

And boy am I posty today!

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

"Mellie" doesn't exist. To offer "Mellie" that choice would be like me that making the choice for the body-owner. Same diff.

So, no, you can't offer "Mellie" that choice. She can't make it. And that's the thing -- no one knows where their choices will lead. That's what makes choice...hard. You have to decide based on the past and the present and make the future. If the future can be glimpsed, then it takes choice away, too.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

it would be tantamount to suicide.

People do choose that.

It's not just a glitch, whatever the Dollhouse thinks. Everything's still in there.

Yeah, I think Topher's assertions that he knows what is happening when he wipes minds and installs new ones are waaaaay overconfident.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

It's not just a glitch, whatever the Dollhouse thinks. Everything's still in there.

That's my take on it, too.

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

Well, I can say that I wouldn't choose to have a different personality (maybe a different body, though, one with a higher metabolism :) ) But, maybe someone else might want to have a different personality, perhaps someone who is really shy or has had a traumatic past.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Victor remembered his real self,

Did they state that explicitly? I didn't see any reason that couldn't have been a bizarre-assed engagement.

I don't remember that at all.

I seem to recall him asking if she broke in okay.

Fair cop. He remembered something else, though, either his real self or a a self he was wearing.

I think that since Echo was remembering Caroline, we were supposed to extrapolate that all of the actives were remembering their real lives. (BTW, I posit that preActiveVictor accidentally killed an innocent person or persons during war, and couldn't live with the guilt, so he accepted the Dollhouse's offer.)

Which is interesting if you consider Mellie. She remembered her encounter with Paul, which makes me wonder if Mellie is her real personality, but one that has been implanted with suggestions. If the person's real personality is the one they want, why not just plant the suggestions of what they need plus the triggers for "treatment" (or assassination as the case may be).

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Although if you're not completely confident you would really be back in five years all the richer, it would be tantamount to suicide.

I would assume that for the most part only people so desperate as to consider suicide a viable alternative would take the Dollhouse's offer in the first place.
