The bleakest movie I ever saw was Blindness and that *was* too much. Just relentless. Not watching that one again anytime soon.

What about Shoot'em Up? The one with Ryan Reynolds. I was so mad at that movie, for starting off in one tone, all happy joyful bang bang, and then completely shifted gears.

I'm trying to think of bleak movies, and maybe I just like them. I found A Clockwork Orange very compelling, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a tragedy for me and one of my favourite movies.
Both may be dark and, yes, CT,HD is quite tragic, but visually both have a lot of color and light. CT,HD even offers a kind of transcendent beauty to it's viewers (very much in keeping with a proper tragedy now that I think about it). What I hated about TDK was that I found it so visually and thematically unrelenting in its bleakness. I just frankly didn't want to be in that universe, not even for 2 hours.
I guess that's what it comes down to for me. I prefer my movies to cater to my visual pleasure in some way.
And okay EEEP! I must go grade now. Really. Pulling myself away.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Breaking the Waves is Bleaky McBleakerpants. Also the film 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days [link] It was brilliant and I am glad I saw it, but it explores violence against women, repressive regimes, personal isolation in a completely believable and heartbreaking way. Hard to watch and powerfully inspiring all at once.

It occurs to me that Pan's Labarynth was pretty bleak, and yet I loved it. Have I watched our copy of it since we bought it? Noooo, but I'm sure I will someday.
