We all went to the How to Train Your Dragon today. I was not excited about the 3D because the idea of keeping the glasses on Ellie was not fun. They actually did fall off many times until she figured out how to sort of hold them on. But that aside, the movie was a lot of fun.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I'm eager to see How To Train Your Dragon as it's done by Chris Sanders who did Lilo and Stitch.
I am not, however, keen on all of the movies being 3-D now.

Oh, really? Now I am more interested. It's been getting really good reviews.

Yeah, it's really annoying.
Iron Man 2 isn't 3D, though, right?
RIGHT?!?
YET.
And they just raised the 3D prices! What the fuck!
You know, I actually thought the 3D looked pretty cool. All the scenes of the flying dragons and such were pretty cool in 3D. I think it's annoying, though, to have to wear special glasses to see a movie.
S. took Sara and they saw 2D, since the closest theater doesn't have 3D. He wasn't disappointed in it. I loved Coraline in 3D, though.
I enjoyed it! It wasn't groundbreaking or amazing or anything, but it was well done and entertaining.

Then I got another batch of notes. I thought it was a joke. They changed the entire tone. I knew these notes would kill the movie. The notes wanted me to lose key scenes, add ridiculous scenes, take out some of the key characters. I asked Mike where they came from. He said, "From us." But when I pressed him, he said, "From John [Travolta]'s camp, but we agree with them."
I refused to incorporate the notes into the script and was fired.
So last night I finally saw Paranormal Activity.
HOLY CRAP! It has been a very long time since any movie scared the living shit out of me like that. And it did it with a budget of all of five bucks. While there are a number of similarities that can be drawn between PA and Blair Witch Project, I think they are superficial at best. Blair Witch really only had the one scary image at the end, almost nothing actually happened on screen. Paranormal Activity let almost everything happen on screen, and contains a LARGE number of images that are going to stick with me for a very long time.
And the economy of both budget and craft that were used for PA were very impressive. Somebody needs to beat Michael Bay about the head and neck (and junk) with this movie.
Bigger, louder, and more special effects does not equal good film making. Not when a movie made for $20 genuinely scared the crap out of me, without using cheap GOTCHAS.
And I watched it in a room with the lights on.
