So, I just saw The Visit, the latest M. Night Shyamalan. I wouldn't say it's good, but I certainly enjoyed myself.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I finally got to see It Follows this weekend, and it's the rare modern horror movie that comes off as completely original and truly frightening. I've heard a lot of comparisons to John Carpenter and Wes Craven, but the quiet building of dread strikes me as reminiscent of earlier horror masters like Polanski, Lewton, and Tournier too, even if the setting is more modern.
Totally agree with you on this, Matt. I REALLY liked the movie, especially on the big reversal of the usual "sex kills" horror movie trope.
I do have one question though - what would happen if you were a total slut (male or female) and just fucked a whole bunch of people, or got into an orgy? Not that that's what the movie was about, but it does raise possibilities for something very disturbing.
I had the impression that was why Greg didn't see anything from It for a number of days after he and Jay had sex.
Oh, creepy. Hadn't thought of that.
The PR machine is gearing up in earnest for Crimson Peak, and I am SO EXCITED. GIVE ME ALL THE TEASER TRAILERS AND INTERVIEWS. They might keep me from exploding in a cloud of bats before Oct. 16.

I feel so old.

Meep! And not in a fun way.
Man, it has been a long-ass stretch of time with no new movies at the local theater I want to go see.
Unfortunately I only found out the Memphis Outflix festival was going on last week after the movies that looked appealing to me had already screened.
Saw "Black Mass" last night. The performances are all really good, but it's kind of plodding. It doesn't really explore the story, just kinda... tells it. Depp is good and has a couple of truly chilling scenes.
How much is Cumberbatch in it? Billy Bulger is one of my favorites.
