If you liked Gods and Monsters I bet you will enjoy Mr. Holmes as well. It's not the best movie I've seen this year (I'd say it's a toss-up between Wild Tales and Woman in Gold for that), but it was immensely enjoyable.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Mr. Holmes is such a quiet film, it's hard to "love" it I think. On Letterboxd, I put in the ridiculously large 3-star group, which includes everything from An Honest Liar to Magic Mike to Age of Ultron and Jupiter Ascending. At some point I really need to upgrade/downgrade some of these by a half star.
The top 2015 movie for me so far is The Diary of a Teenage Girl. And then, on a less serious note, Mad Max Fury Road and What We Do in the Shadows. I imagine that will change when Oscar season rolls around.
I may have to throw Mission Impossible into that mix. That was a damn fine action film. With a woman who kicks all kinds of ass and has the sense to take off her shoes when needed. What's more, she's treated as a peer and there are no puppy eyes to be found.
I loved the scene in RED where Helen Mirren dumps the heels for a pair of boots--weren't they white, too?
Shaun the Sheep is the expected whimsical delight from Aardman Studios. It's interesting that there's essentially no dialog in the entire movie.
I did like Gods and Monsters.
Just saw Mr. Holmes. A lovely film. I cried, as expected. It was sad and uplifting and had mysteries to be solved and was just excellent all around. Recommended.
There were more people in the theater than I expected, too. All "mature" folks of my generation or older, but that certainly makes for a quieter theater. Them younguns don't know what they're missing.
Oh, Mr. Holmes is showing only 30 miles from me! Maybe I can make that happen.
-t, I'm at the New Parkway right now AIFG! Thanks for letting me know about it. (I'm about to meet javachik and rewatch Spy).
Yay!
