Les Aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec
Does it have subtitles?
I enjoyed some parts of
Kingsman
mainly because the person I was with was really enjoying it; if I'd been watching it alone I would've been bored and irritated. The violence was too ridiculous to bother me, it was just stupid. And then they
killed off Colin Firth,
who was the only character I found interesting at all, so I didn't really care what happened after that.
I have
Lucy
on DVD but haven't gotten around to watching it. That's another one that I was really looking forward to when I first heard of it, and then was disappointed by (10% of our brains!) before I ever even saw it. I should go on and watch it so I can sell the DVD.
Ant-Man was one of my favorite marvel movies yet.
I agree with Gris. Astonishing, for a movie and a character I expected to loathe.
I'm planning on seeing
Mr. Holmes
this weekend. It's showing on one screen at 12:35 at my local theater. I don't know if I'll like it, simply because I want Sherlock Holmes to be immortal. I'll probably cry.
Mission: Impossible
is taking all the cinema real estate this weekend. I haven't seen any of the others, and I doubt I'll see this one.
Fantastic Four
is only on one screen already, which tells me it's really not doing well;
Ant-Man
has limited showings but it's still here, which tells me it's doing okay.
Does it have subtitles?
Yes, they come up automatically. Sorry, I couldn't remember offhand whether they were using the full title in English or cutting it down à la
Amélie.
If you liked Gods and Monsters I bet you will enjoy Mr. Holmes as well. It's not the best movie I've seen this year (I'd say it's a toss-up between Wild Tales and Woman in Gold for that), but it was immensely enjoyable.
Mr. Holmes
is such a quiet film, it's hard to "love" it I think. On Letterboxd, I put in the ridiculously large 3-star group, which includes everything from
An Honest Liar
to
Magic Mike
to
Age of Ultron
and
Jupiter Ascending.
At some point I really need to upgrade/downgrade some of these by a half star.
The top 2015 movie for me so far is
The Diary of a Teenage Girl.
And then, on a less serious note,
Mad Max Fury Road
and
What We Do in the Shadows.
I imagine that will change when Oscar season rolls around.
I may have to throw
Mission Impossible
into that mix. That was a damn fine action film. With a woman who kicks all kinds of ass and has the sense to take off her shoes when needed. What's more, she's treated as a peer and there are no puppy eyes to be found.
I loved the scene in RED where Helen Mirren dumps the heels for a pair of boots--weren't they white, too?
Shaun the Sheep is the expected whimsical delight from Aardman Studios. It's interesting that there's essentially no dialog in the entire movie.
I did like
Gods and Monsters.
Just saw
Mr. Holmes.
A lovely film. I cried, as expected. It was sad and uplifting and had mysteries to be solved and was just excellent all around. Recommended.
There were more people in the theater than I expected, too. All "mature" folks of my generation or older, but that certainly makes for a quieter theater. Them younguns don't know what they're missing.
Oh, Mr. Holmes is showing only 30 miles from me! Maybe I can make that happen.
