So, I finally saw Great Gatsby last night (yes, I'm catching up on a lot of movies).

Was I supposed to like any of those characters? Because I didn't.

Had you read it, Sean? Because, yeah, they're all pretty loathesome.

No! I do kinda want to. And I'm impressed with Baz Luhrmann for making a movie about characters I didn't like, but that was still interesting and engaging.

I did that last week!

I'm assuming we weren't supposed to. No, I've never read the book. But DAMN the movie was sparkly. Which is pretty much what I watched it for, so I was happy.

Man, I always assume Gatsby is a "spinach" book that you're forced to read in high school. Yeah, these are not likable people, no matter how pretty they are. Tom and Daisy? Shallow, vapid, and loathesome. Jordan? Sociopath. Gatsby? Creepy, dodgy, and delusional. Nick is just...boring. And sad, because he doesn't realize how awful everyone else is.

Most of my English teachers in HS were invested in avoiding "spinach" books. The only one I can recall was Grapes of Wrath, which I predictably HATED LIKE BURNING.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

I LOVE Grapes of Wrath. Look at us, with our wildly divergent opinions and what not.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Yeah, I think I liked Grapes of Wrath too. Probably thought Great Gatsby was okay but not all that.

Compassionately intolerant

Oh my. I hated Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Gulliver's Travels. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. White Fang.

Poor Mr. Bendoski. I'm certain I made his life hell in Senior Humanities.

I seem to recall liking reading Gataby. But I think it coincided with my hating everyone phase, so it just fed into my "everyone sucks" mindset. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much now. I haven't seen the movie yet.
