A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

Yeah, Premium Rush was actually a lot better than I expected. I figured JGL would be great, and he was, but the plot and some of the secondary characters weren't bad either.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I got into a weird discussion with someone who was challenging the general good opinion of JGL--not saying he disagreed, but rather that the good opinion didn't exist.

One of his citations? TDKR.

I'm wondering--you have people saying that's why he's not good? And they outnumber the people saying he was all that and the movie was the Blake story and when can we have the next one?

When I countered him, he said it wasn't that his performance was bad, but that many people thought the character was the weak link in the movie, and they might blame JGL in error, although he didn't make any bad acting choices. And the "they" that might are enough to say that JGL doesn't have a good rep, never mind a "hot new (but old) thing" rating. It's ruined by all those people who only judge him on one movie and can't tell writing from acting, and think the character sucked?

WHAT UNIVERSE ARE YOU IN??? WHO DO YOU HANG OUT WITH??

And why are they stupid?

But it was the less frustrating discussion, compared to "I have found all the flaws in the premise of Looper, and there is no explanation the movie can give, nor entertainment that the well regarded director and cast (well, except for JGL, since it's clearly been established by someone else that he sucks) can conjure up to make my questions less important."

And, yes, I do regard it as different from "A universe in which all forms of energy have disappeared..." That's just a dumb thing to say. Your show might not suck, but please don't say that about it.

Because books.

I thought JGL was universally adored. That's what I'm going to keep believing, anyway.

io9 proposes Batman Beyond for further Bat movies. Which sounds good to me, but here's my not-a-comics-person question: Do they need to work from existing material, or can they make up stuff? Because the way TDKR ended would set up a Batman Beyond scenario pretty easily, if Bruce would agree to come back from Europe anyway.

Punishingly Intricate

How could he not be??? He is ADORABLE!

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I'm not going to lie, at the end of TDKR, I wished JGL's name had been Terry.

"already on the kiss-cam with Karl Marx"-

I think he's great. But I thought Everybody kind of agreed on it after (500) Days. although I like the Lookout a lot.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

JGL, for me, grew from that kid on that show, to a recurring surprise of delight with every new project I saw of his. And my little brother helped solidify the opinion of awesome with his own enthusiasm. Said lil' bro turned me onto Firefly and Buffy, I respect his opinion greatly.

Am in the mood now to rewatch Brick.

GS: If you had to choose between kicking evil in the head or the behind, which would you choose, and why? Minsc: I'm not sure I understand the question. I have two feet, do I not? You do not take a small plate when the feast of evil welcomes seconds.

Which strikes me as possibly the most hilarious sequel. Taken. AGAIN. Taken: Another Family Member.

Makes me think of Last Action Hero, where Arnold's character keeps having family members killed off in every movie. "You killed my uncle's second cousin (or whatever it was), now it's personal!"

io9 proposes Batman Beyond for further Bat movies.

I haven't seen TDKR yet, but I loved Batman: Beyond and think they make a pretty good case there.

I can't wait for Taken 3: And Your Little Dog, Too!

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Thing is, Taken was not a good movie. Like the first 20 minutes are okay...then BOOM. The abyss.
