Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Fun fact - Steve Blum, aka Amon from The Legend of Korra, voices one of the main characters. Anjelica Huston voices another.
Every time I hear Steve Blum's voice I think of Spike Spiegel (though obviously he's voiced a ton more characters and did a great job with Amon.)
I mostly liked the movie, except for the way it felt like it started in the middle of another movie. Like when the opening credits rolled (and I understand the purpose of the opening credits in this movie, let me just say that preemptively), I had missed an hour of the movie already. Weird.
What's weird is that BOTH Hulk movies decided to start the narrative during the opening credits.
I'm assuming Liv Tyler was cast for her ability to whisper "Bruce" with tears in her eyes, because THAT'S ALL SHE DID.
She said it SEVEN TIMES, with a bonus four times without the question mark.
Also, in Avengers, Bruce said he "broke Harlem," but I gotta say -- NSM his fault.
Seriously. I'd say less than 25% of it was his fault.
As an action movie, it was pretty fun. As a Hulk movie? There really wasn't anything there at all. At least
Hulk
had an actual plot with characters in it.
(This one did, however, have random cameos by Martin Starr and Michael K. Williams.)
Conclusion: Whedon/Ruffalo Hulk FTW.
Saw
Pirates: Band of Misfits,
Aardman Studios latest, today. A very British movie. Very funny. Brian Blessed voicing the King of the Pirates was perfect.
Oh my god, SPIDER-MAN.
Seriously, that is the Spider-Man movie of my dreams. Andrew Garfield is *my* Peter Parker. Holy Jebus. He's everything I wanted Tobey Maguire to be, but wasn't. And I don't know how much of the action scenes in the Spidey suit were CGI, but -- DAT ASS. Oh my god.
Flash Thompson! Character growth! That was fantastic.
Emma Stone really was great. She was practically sparkly. But not in a vampire way.
I love that the plot's conflict/angst/Big Bad was the result of
an EQUATION.
I mean, Peter name-checked the damn
equation
as the reason the Lizard was created. It just made me laugh. (Noooo! Not the
equation
!!!!!)
I'm a little thrown that Sally Field is old enough to play Aunt May.
Finally: Dennis Leary. Has he had ALL the plastic surgery, or did he leave a little for a Kardashian or two? DAMN, man.
Oh, and whoever said upthread that this movie has daddy issues coming out its ears, hell to the yeah. Good Lord.
t edit
Oh! MECHANICAL WEB-SHOOTERS FTW.
DAT ASS. Oh my god.
Ahahahaha, seriously. I actually had that exact thought at one point. That is a shapely booty.
Flash Thompson! Character growth! That was fantastic.
I don't think I've ever seen Flash with more than one layer!
MECHANICAL WEB-SHOOTERS FTW.
Weren't they wonderful?
So did you or did you not tear up at
ALL THE CRANES
??
So did you or did you not tear up at
I SO DID!!!!! God damn, I even *knew* I was being manipulated, and I still teared up!
MECHANICAL WEB-SHOOTERS FTW.
Weren't they wonderful?
Oh my god, while he was making them, I was all "Science, BITCHES!"
I SO DID!!!!! God damn, I even *knew* I was being manipulated, and I still teared up!
Right? I loved how
the dad specifically said out loud, "That's the guy who saved my son!" Just in case we didn't recognize him. (Um, I didn't. But still. It was so blatantly silly.)
Oh my god, while he was making them, I was all "Science, BITCHES!"
As he was making them, I was all, "Why did I ever settle for organic webshooters?"
So have you seen the stuff about the Untold Story? I'm really glad they cut that stuff out, but it's interesting that it seems to have been all cut out so late.
So have you seen the stuff about the Untold Story?
I hadn't seen any of that, but I did wonder about Peter just
dropping the hunt for Uncle Ben's killer.
I wondered if maybe we were supposed to assume that he realized that
vengeance wasn't a good life choice
and just decided to focus on the super-heroing part.
All that weird
genetic destiny
stuff -- I remember it from the trailers, and I remember Dr. Connors'
line about how all the other subjects on whom cross-species DNA merging was tried ended up dying,
and thinking, well, that's not entirely true, is it? Maybe that'll be addressed in a future movie -- but I hope not. I really don't want to see him ending up as Peter Parker,
human guinea pig.
For one thing, the costume would suck compared to the Spidey costume.
That was C. Thomas Howell!
I also
teared up at the crane scene. I love shit like that.
That was C. Thomas Howell!
Ponyboy was Jack's Dad? I'll be damned.
