So, how was your summer? Mine was fun. Saw some fish. Went mad with hunger. Hallucinated a whole bunch.

Heh.

(If this doesn't make any sense, it's part of a running joke about how "Strong Women Characters" have to be kickass and nearly-naked, and show their boobs and butts at all times.)

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Jilli,

I'm more neutral tending to negative about Austin Powers, but what was it about the character that bothered you so? You didn't like the parody of James Bond?

I can't speak for Jilli, but I loathe Austin Powers. Don't much like Mike Meyers, either, truth be told. I don't have any explanation for it, it's entirely visceral.

Anything asserted to be like Austin Powers would be something I would steer far away from, myself.

My feeling about Austin Powers is that both the movie and character were essentially one big fart joke. Not my kind of humor, and certainly not in movie length doses.

That was part of it. Plus the over-the-top 70s swinger smarm. Yes, I know that was the intent, but it just grated on me. And I fear that Dark Shadows is going to be full of "hip and swingin'", with a heavy layer of "fish-out-of-water" attempts at comedy.

I think all of my worries about Dark Shadows were summed up by the shot in the trailer of Barnabas brushing his fangs, and the camera showing there was no reflection in the mirror. How zany! Look at his funny facial expression! Ugh.

And yet, I'll probably still go see it.

I love Bond movies. I like Dr. Evil. Austin Powers should be eaten by the sharks with lasers.

Yes! This! My most despised genre of comedy. Take a perfectly competent human being and turn him into a helpless dope, so funny!

I am so-so on Bond movies, but I thought Dr. Evil was at least vaguely amusing. I didn't spend his every scene rolling my eyes and gritting my teeth.

I'm not a fan of the Roger Moore Bond, he's a bit smarmy. Dalton et al., now, those are tasty.

I liked the first Daniel Craig one.

Smarm! That's my big problem. I am fine with over-the-top, I am fine with camp. But smarm and hipster irony make me want to punch things.
