I just put all those pre-Avenger movies in my Netflix queue yesterday! I guess it's about the right time to start prepping. I've only seen the first Iron Man, and I'm going to go ahead and watch it again because I know I liked it the first time but I don't really remember specifics.

Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I'm actually not 100% sure - I'm pretty much the "huh, is that some Marvel thing?" person in my comics group. But he doesn't, like, grow to giant size and become radioactive or anything Marvelicious like that.
Also, who is the woman who is not Scarlett Johansson?
Cobie Smulders? I only know that she's in it from Go Fug Yourself and similar.
Will there be things in it that comics readers will catch that you won't (like Hawkeye in Thor)?
As a non-comics reader, I caught that (not Hawkeye specifically, of course) because it was Jeremy Renner. "Why would they have Jeremy Renner in one scene of this movie? ....Oh, he must be Somebody."
Also, who is the woman who is not Scarlett Johansson?
Cobie Smulders, as Maria Hill. She's a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. No superpowers, but Joe Quesada describes her thusly:
[Hill] is such a strong personality, she's like a force of nature and quite frankly, while perhaps not immediately loved by all involved, she's certainly as strong and imposing a figure as Nick Fury. Right now I feel that people view her as the outsider but [while] I don't think she’s any harsher than Fury has ever been, what's different is that we aren’t quite clear about her motives
Sure, Nick Fury orders people gunned down for verbally objecting to laws that haven't been passed yet all the time!

Should we tell her about Clint Barton's stint as Goliath?
In Thor when the guy grabbed the bow, I figured there was something more there, so I looked up the trivia on the movie and got to Hawkeye from there.
I know I'll never have a Marvel fan's knowledge of cannon, but I'd like to be able to get the movie to movie references and character movie-backstories, where available.
Doesn't he have a thing where he's unable to miss a shot?
No, that's Bullseye. Also Hawkeye and Black Widow have romantic history. Or did in comics canon.

It's pretty clear they have some sort of history in the teaser where she puts Coulson on hold. (Did I vague that up enough?)
I don't know what they've retconned but originally Black Widow was a soviet agent and Hawkeye was a criminal (jewel thief type). I'm getting the sense that both of them were recruited then trained by Shield in this series.
