Just got back from Cabin in the Woods. It was so cool seeing the "Mutant Enemy Production" title during the opening credits!
Of course, being a longtime Mutant Enemy watcher,
I figured out the underlying plot pretty much as soon as the eerily familiar chemist mentioned "Downstairs," but it was still mucho entertaining to see how it played out
.
Was not fond of the last two seconds of film (
too literal and anthropomorphic, I'd have preferred tentacles or something even less comprehensible
), but the
surprise guest shot a few minutes earlier
buoyed me up pretty well.
I need to try to figure out, without spoiling myself somehow, if
Cabin in the Woods
will be too scary for me!
The trailers, IIRC, are a pretty good indicator of the kinds of shocks and starts it packs. There's some gore, but if you can handle watching The Walking Dead it shouldn't be too much for you.
Yeah, I didn't think it was that scary. It's definitely a little gory, but there's only one or two "shock" moments and little to none of the suspense I
actually
find scary.
I also didn't like it as much as I wanted to. I saw where they were going, and I liked where they were going, but I found the implementation to be less successful than I might have liked. It reminded me of my feelings for
Jennifer's Body,
which I also wanted to like more than I did. I also wanted it to to be actually scarier. I think I would have preferred it if
they had "chosen" almost ANY of the other monsters, almost all of whom I found way creepier than the redneck zombies.
I also agree with you, Matt, re: the ending.
My problem with
The Walking Dead
has to do with the annoying characters not the gore!
I have a problem with a certain kind of creepy. I didn't think
The Ring
was that good but I couldn't sleep for 3 nights after seeing it. Also,
The Blair Witch Project
freaked my shit out.
I don't watch or like horror movies, but I both really liked The Crow and Seven, and both sent me into an existential week of despair and depression.
I also consider Nothing But Trouble to be the most evil movie ever
shudders,
and have had nightmares stemming from Dumb and Dumber.
The Ring messed my sleep up for a couple days too, though while watching I didn't think it was as scary as the Japanese original or Ju-on.
The part of
The Ring
that got me was the video. *That's* the kind of disturbing that gives me nightmares.
It reminded me of my feelings for Jennifer's Body, which I also wanted to like more than I did.
I adore
Jennifer's Body,
but I don't really think of it as strictly horror.
For me it was the initial videotape victim in the closet. Not just the makeup FX, something about the way she moved too.
We just got back from seeing Cabin in the Woods. I liked it more than I thought I would because I'm not usually a horror movie fan. Being ME-savvy, I totally figured out what was going on, but there were some funny stuff in it and I walked out of the theater chuckling. Matt, ITA about the end.
