Jezebel has unredacted the names of the tweeters. I'm maliciously happy, and I stopped by a couple of the twitter accounts. One's deleted entirely, and one seems to be not only missing the racist Hunger Games post, but there's a re-tweet of a Trayvon Martin sympathy tweet. So sensitive, some people. So empathetic.

I generally miss nuances of character description, unless it's a big deal, like someone gets rhapsodic over the color of someone's hair etc. The people in my head appear more as the shapes of their names rather than pictures of faces, ie, the shape of the word Katniss rather than a person.

BUT I am not that visual in my head, so don't necessarily picture characters at all, unless what they look like is explicitly described. So obviously Cho Chang is Asian, but I wouldn't (if I had read those books) have an actual picture in my head.

Which is why I don't have huge problems with casting choices in general.

But if you say a coat is red, it's red.

Which is why I felt that either Schindler's Ark or Michener's Poland must have ripped off the other even though I read them years apart. Same damn girl with the red coat.

And when my husband came home and questioned why our blonde little boy's bottom was wrapped in one of his t-shirts and I explained the situation to him, I could tell when he hid his face in his hands how upset he was about the whole situation as well. And then he put his hands on my shoulders and shook his head before looking into my eyes and said, 'Just promise me you'll never watch The Crying Game.'

I want to believe this means that the husband has a clue while the poster does not. (Assuming the poster is serious, which I suspect not.)

I somehow missed any descriptors about Ged's coloring the first time I read A Wizard of Earthsea. (In my defense I was like eleven at the time, so I wasn't too concerned about what anyone looked like except the dragons.)

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that the poster is creating a character to mock here, with a husband who gets it.

Me too, until I bought a copy of the trilogy in England, and my DH ranted about the blue-eyed blond white Ged on the cover.

I remembered the invaders looked like that, and so presumably different from Ged, but I didn't bother to picture Ged as other than the word "Ged."

Now I try to really picture the characters, because of things like Hunger Games. If you don't see Rue and Thresh as "the dark, dark kind of skin", then you miss that the Capitol has put African-heritaged people to work on government plantations, which is another whole level of commentary.
