And her cat deserts her!
Pyewacket!
The first time I watched
Bell, Book, and Candle,
when I was a tiny gothling of 9 or so, at the end of the movie I turned to my Dad and said,
"That's DUMB. When I'm a witch and I fall in love, I'm not going to lose MY powers."
My Dad, being who he is, said of course I wasn't going to.
Agree so hard with Jilli on BB&C. That one and Rear Window I had seen when I was little and remembered fondly. They disappeared into a vault somewhere for decades and I was all clappy-hands and eager to watch when they brought them out again. Rear Window is dated, but charming, still. But despite Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs, and Hermione Gingold, not to mention Novak actually manages a smolder and Stewart is adorable and stubborn, and the gorgeous, gorgeous 50s interiors, the lose-their-powers-when-they-fall-in-love of it all just leaves a bitter, bitter aftertaste.
Lifetime intent, to have two cats, named Pyewacket and Grimalkin.
Or alternatively, Hepzibah and Mehitabel.

Pete has informed me that I can never name a cat Pyewacket, because it sounds ridiculous. Yes, I've shown him the movie, but that didn't change his mind. But since he's okay with vampire-themed cat names, I'm not going to complain. Much.

I've been to a restaurant named Pyewacket in Chapel Hill, NC. Don't know whether it still exists. But a fine place for a Saturday lunch.

Sadly, it's no longer. But still remembered by many. Also, you should come back down here for a visit sometime!
I recently found a high school report I did on
I Bell, Book, and Candle.
It said basically "this had a really cool poetic name that it totally failed to live to, and I guess it must be a metaphor for something, like that women should stay away from men because if they don't they lose all their powers."
A+ .
The conceit is that's how she knows it's really love -- she's lost her powers. But there are a million ways to twist that so she can keep them *and* realize she's actually in love. Definitely the weakest part of the movie for me, too.
I have such fondness for Bewitched (the show, not the movie) and even I Dream of Jeannie, having grown up with them, and I don't think I got that these incredibly cool powerful women with actual *powers* let the men they loved dictate when and how to use them.
Of course, if Bewitched were made today, there wouldn't be a show, because I think the perception is that most guys would say, "Sure! Twitch me up a meal and a big-screen TV and season tickets!"
One thing I enjoyed about Bewitched is occasionally Samantha would get tired of Darren, put on her cool black witch's dress, and head off with her mother to hang with the other witches. I was fascinated by the whole witch world.
