Oh, the Civil Wars are so great! I will have to listen to that pronto. (I actually like Taylor Swift just fine)
Buffista Movies 7: Brides for 7 Samurai
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I thought that was really beautiful. And clearly written by The Civil Wars, not Swift - quite melancholic and melodic, which is their stock in trade. Beautiful harmonies.
I like Swift for teeny pop-country, but this is something else. Folky and lovely. I hope they put it in a good spot in the movie.
that was really pretty. i don't like TS, but i do like The Civil Wars.
The Hairpin covers Cary Grant, finally.
Nice article, but I've never understood the persisting conventional wisdom that Cary Grant "played slight variations on the same character". Walter Burns in His Girl Friday has absolutely nothing in common with his character in Holiday - yet it's always said that he basically played himself.
Am I having Third World problems? I can't see the song...
I just went to it and it says it's been blocked by UMG for copyright reasons.
That's so weird -- I just listened to it not a half hour ago. But I'd opened the link this afternoon and left it there, so.
You can listen to a sample of it on iTunes. And the song has definitely grown on me.
ETA: It's available on io9 now.
It's not bad. I don't get why people (not here) are freaked out. I've never heard her before, so I don't have that reflex. It's not my thing, but it's sweet and plaintive and the story definitely had that side to it, with Prim and everything.
There are plenty of reasons not to love Taylor Swift, but I think a lot of the hate-on for her is knee jerk reaction against anybody who is THAT popular amongst young people. My guess is the freak-out has to do with the fact that many people thing the Hunger Games shouldn't pander to the popular, which I think is silly; The Hunger Games is extraordinarily popular!
