AV Club agrees with Jessica, raves about Mission Impossible (mostly about how awesome Brad Bird can direct an action scene) and is meh about Sherlock Holmes.

Ebert liked both of them, gave both of them 3.5 starts, but did seem especially blown away by a particular skyscraper-themed scene in MI.

I can't imagine seeing Tom Cruise in anything again. Sherlock Holmes kind of looks like Spiderman 3 in the trailers, in the sense that it looks like it has everything but the kitchen sink in it...I'll probably see it over the holidays, though.

My wife wants to see MI, and I am now more happy to do so. I think Tom Cruise is pretty spectacularly crazy, but I don't think of the Mission Impossible series as being so particularly about him to make me skip it just because he bugs me. The star of the show, as far as I'm concerned, is Ridiculous Explosions, who is pretty good people all told. As long as this one is less boring than MI:3, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
I didn't love the first Holmes, but I'm sure I'll see that one eventually too.

I find that I've grown painfully tired of every RDJ character having the "Let me explain in jaded monotone how much more awesome than everyone else I am. Repeatedly." thing going on, so I'm going to pass on the Sherlock Holmes movie.

I find his Sherlock Holmes incredibly annoying. Possibly because his English accent isn't very good, which he covers up by mugging at the camera and mumbling.
