The movie very much feels like she's not supposed to enjoy sex. Very much. After her wedding night,
she's bruised, and Edward swears off sleeping with her again, but she doesn't mind because he loves her.
Which has terrible subtext. If she'd just said, you know, that she
likes it rough,
I'd have laughed, cheered, and moved on.
But what a message to send to teens!
She actually does say (someone
please
correct me, tell me I'm wrong) that in a year she wants to
look in the mirror and see a person like the person she sees when she looks at Edward now.
That's how vacant her sense of self is. I was startled.
Fascinating. Yeah, in the book I felt the message was she was into the sex. Funny how often movies shift things in a more conservative direction.
She says
it was good, but she really doesn't look like it was.
It's perfectly possible that I'm blaming acting. But it was the picture of
a victim excusing her abuser.
It was really creepy. And not in a good vampire way.
In fact, Jacob was really pretty sensible throughout. Romance be damned.
The John Carter trailer made me think terrible things about the movie. Nothing about the movie looked original and I got no clear sense of plot or story.
Anyone have a different reaction to it?
I thought it looked fun but didn't make me remember the book.
Huh. I didn't know Daniel Day Lewis was playing Abraham Lincoln. Here's a picture of him with the hair and makeup (but sans costume) and boy, that's a good likeness indeed: [link]
I first read that as Daniel Dae Kim and was surprised, excited, and perhaps a little baffled by the "good likeness" comment. (But seriously, that would be pretty cool!)
Ok, finally saw the John Carter trailer. I still think Taylor Kitsch is a bit miscast, but the Green Martians look awesome. I wish I remember more of the story: all I really recall is the first bit after he gets there.
I have a hard time paying attention to the trailer because I love that Peter Gabriel cover so much.

That pretty much sums up my reaction to Edward.
