That's why it's heartbreaking.
That was really well done in the movie.

It's not irreversible. She restores their memories afterwards.
But I thought Lockhart's victims could not be restored. Maybe it makes a difference who performs the charm.

I think there are different ways to do it, but I suspect the key is that the person who did the charm would probably have to take it off and Lockhart had no motive to do so.
But when his spell backfired he was going for complete obliviation so it fried his brains.
I'm a little annoyed at Hermione for not immediately devouring 'Beedle the Bard'. Cripes, witch, knowing you and knowing Dumbledore why do you think he left it to you?

Well, in the book she does read it incessantly. Also, Dumbledore's version is written in runes.
