Earlier today I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I had this whole thing I was going to post about how it's held up so well over 30 (!) years (seriously, that is a fantastic movie and Karen Allen is a badass), but then all that was erased by watching Idiocracy. That's exactly the kind of movie I hate, and then I feel like a jackass for not finding it funny when the rest of the world finds it funny. But seriously? So unbelievably stupid. And logically inconsistent. Futurama did it first and better and was actually funny.
However? Still not as bad as Magnolia.
The Invention of Lying might help get the taste of Idiocracy out of your mouth.

OMG, WX+online movie critics. First we hide the name of the thread to hide from one, and the other one that does find us seems to revel in disliking what people take easy enjoyment of and elevating things people feel no emotional connection to.
I swear, I have to think of Mr. Jessica to remind me that's just not how it always is.

I loved Idiocracy, for all that it's a horrible mess of a film. (I feel bad for the filmmakers whenever I see something that's been SO obviously worked over by the studio execs. I have a feeling the director's cut would have been brilliant all the way through, instead of tiny flashes of brilliance hidden under an incoherent jumble of bad editing. Still, Electrolytes! It's what plants crave! And the House of Representin'...I'm pretty sure when the film first came out, that scene played like a parody. Now it's depressingly like watching C-Span.)
I thought Idiocracy was pretty good as a short film. It just didn't have enough meat to stretch to 90 minutes.
I have come to believe that Mike Judge is not capable of working at movie length. Even Office Space was a great collection of bits in search of a movie. I love it, but it doesn't hold together as a single piece.
No shame in that - I think Mel Brooks (apart from Young Frankestein) and Python (apart from Life of Brian) have the same problems.
