The only surprise was the Guy Pearce was in it and I had no idea. When did he drop into obscurity?
My reaction exactly! IIRC, he decided he didn't much like the Hollywood life and returned to Australia, which is why he hasn't capitalised on his profile following
L.A. Confidential
and
Memento.
It took me some time to be sure it was him.
He was a major Aussie teenaged star for years on television, so he had his bank account squared away a long time before L.A. Confidential.
True, although bear in mind that he was earning an Australian soapie salary.
Neighbours
didn't quite offer the same kind of bucks as
Melrose Place.

Yeah, my impression was that after Monte Cristo & Time Machine he decided he'd rather take smaller roles in movies he liked than star in crap.
I can't remember where I picked that up now. I feel like it was an interview with a director, maybe? It's all hazy.
So remember that great Volkswagen commercial with Little Vader?
Marvel's made a parody with Little Thor. It's hilarious and adorable.
Movie casting news and rumors from I09:
The Hunger Games
National treasure John C. Reilly is reportedly in talks to play Haymitch Abernathy, the drunken ex-champion who trains Katniss and Peeta for the games. [Vulture]
Caprica's Paula Malcomson has reportedly been cast as Katniss's mother. [Heat Vision]
The Hobbit
Peter Jackson has confirmed that Ian Holm will return as the older version of Bilbo Baggins, presumably in the same scenes that see Elijah Wood reprise his role as Frodo. [MTV Movies Blog]
Jackson also announced that Rob Kazinsky will have to drop out of the role of Fili for personal reasons. He also explained what impact this will have on filming:
"I should say that Rob's departure will not affect ongoing filming of The Hobbit, nor will it impact work done to date, as we had yet to film much of Fili's storyline. At the moment we are shooting scenes featuring Bilbo without the Dwarves, which will give us time to find a new Fili."

I'm worried there's not enough Tom Hardy in Warrior. From my tumblr, you'd think he was the only person in it. From the previews, there's some other guy he fights. His accent sounds really good, though.
Some interesting movies coming out on Criterion editions soon.
Zazie Dans Le Metro (Malle), 6/28
Something Wild (Demme), 5/10
Solaris (Tarkovsky), 5/24
Insignificance (Roeg), 6/14
Blow Out (De Palma), 4/26
Black Moon (Malle), 6/28
So I saw SUPER this weekend. Wow, was that NOT a comedy. There were humorous moments, but dear lord, anybody expecting a LOL comedy is going to be driven out of the theater by around the halfway point, if not sooner.
That said, I really liked it because it was so disturbing, and I went in knowing that is was in no way a full-blown comedy, given the reviews and
references to TAXI DRIVER thrown out by the director and Rainn Wilson.
But, damn, that was pretty damn dark. And then there's the
coda, which I still can't figure out how to read. However, that's OK. I feel the same way about TAXI DRIVER (and STRAW DOGS to reference another movie with a very confusing climactic "cathartic" blood-bath).

Well, there goes my allowance for the foreseeable future. I already had Blow Out on order, but DAMN, the only one I don't know is the first one. And Black Moon is something I've never seen but been hearing about for years. Not that it's a great movie, but definitely an interesting bump in Malle's career.

Hearing that it stars Rainn Wilson tipped me off to that fact without ever seeing a trailer.
