It's more subtle than in Anansi Boys.
I had a whahuh? look on my face when I read this. Then I had to remind myself that I did not read Anansi Boys, but rather, listened to it read by Lenny Henry. I've checked that one out of the library three times so far and hear something new every time I listen to it. Absolutely wonderful. But, in no way subtle in the 'casting.'

Did different people read different roles? Or did you assume the main character was black just because the reader of the whole book was black?

Never would have been good for me.
I just saw Super. I think I liked it. It was pretty uncompromising with the violence, and the turns from funny to disturbing can be wrenching. But I think I liked it.
Note: I haven't seen Kickass so I can't compare.

I could have sworn I made the assumption based on something the reader said, but it may have been solely based on the voices Henry did.

He did black voices? I'm not getting what you're saying. Maybe I should listen to it.
For the record, I got that he was West Indian, most likely Jamaican, but I don't remember an explicit calling out of race.
Is there a cinematographer-turned-director who's won multiple Oscars for the former?
There's Steven Soderbergh, who has won an Oscar for directing and does all of his cinematography under the pseudonym Peter Andrews.
Barry Sonnenfeld would also fit the bill if he had won some Oscars.
They are all who spring to mind just now.

First I've heard of it. But I don't ususally trust these guys when they say they've retired. Something interesting comes along and they're right back in the saddle.
