I'm surprised Nolan didn't get nominated for director
Well, that's the inevitable result of having 10 Best Picture noms, which, surprisingly, I've decided I don't mind as it gives a chance to films like
Winter's Bone.
Of course, that should mean they can eliminate the Pixar category, but alas, no.
I hope Hailee Steinfeld wins for Best Supporting Actress, but I haven't seen the other films of that category.
Wasn't she the lead, though? Certainly sounds that way from everything I've heard about it (which I seriously need to see).
Looking at the Best Director group, I was trying to figure who I'd pull out to put Nolan in. My first thought was Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan. But maybe it was his directorial efforts that made the movie watchable despite all its flaws.
For the Best Pictures, I have seen all but Winter's Bone. I think I also want to watch Blue Valentine.
Yeah, but I'm sure they put her in Supporting so she'd have a better chance at winning. See also, Christian Bale.
Wasn't she the lead, though?
Only in the sense that she's the protagonist, appears in every scene, and the story is told from her point of view. Besides that, the best-supporting nom makes perfect sense.
Remember that guy who did all those cool illustrations of movie scenes as if they were pages in childrens' books? He has some limited-edition artwork for sale:

I like the chestburster one and the ones from the Terminator movies....
Hailee was amazing. I hate that the studio didn't put her up for Best Actress. Travesty.
And I honestly don't get Mark Ruffalo getting a Best Supporting Actor nod. I'm not a Ruffalo hater, but I just don't get it.
Were they that hard pressed to find good supporting actor roles?

An actor's actor maybe? Remember, only actors pick the acting nominees.
I don't get Ruffalo/Benning for The Kids are All Right, period.
also don't get Andrew Garfield not getting the Supporting Actor nom for The Social Network and of course Nolan for Best Director. though after seeing the GGs, the latter one surprises me less. Inception was completely locked out. The Social Network was good. Inception was great. i don't get it.
Benning drew me into the story while Ruffalo kept throwing me out. Even so, Benning for the Best Supporting Actress? Eh. Hailee all the way.
