For those of you who remember how gracious, cool and stylish Vidal Sassoon was on Shear Genius, there's a documentary about his (quite interesting) life.
He was in an orphanage from ages 5-11, fought as a soldier and then, of course, revolutionized hairstyling and more.
We decided to try and watch
Twilight
last night. The DH lasted right up until Edward told Bella he'd been watching her sleep, at which point the DH said "This is horrifying and we have to turn it off right now."
D actually enjoys the Twilight movies. The special efects are pretty good.
I forget the name of the actress playing Maddy in the new True Grit but she was 13 during filming. Her mom made her a costume to wear to her audition.
So I've finally seen
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
and
Heathers.
I wasn't really into
Fast Times.
It wasn't very engaging, and I didn't care much about any of the characters, and oh my God, I have no idea why Spicoli is so popular. He was so fucking annoying and overdone.
I loved
Heathers,
though! I could see the influence on
Buffy
("What's your damage?")
and, well,
Mean Girls,
obviously, but it still holds up as a great movie today. Funny and dark. And now I finally understand the context for "Fuck me gently with a chainsaw" and "I love my dead gay son."
Ha! I know someone who always goes on about what an awesome person he is, and whenever he's done with his, "and then I rescued some puppies and fed the homeless." I always want to respond, "You're beautiful."
It made that episode where he and Janeway got turned into lizards (or something) and mated a lot less hard to deal with, however.
Not to be pedantic (who am I kidding, this is B.org), but IIRC it was Janeway and Paris, not Janeway and Chakotay, who got devolved into amphibians.
That's also the episode that made me stop watching; I couldn't believe they'd written something that stupid.
As for True Grit, I really enjoyed it. I had to look away for some of the violence, and the snake scene didn't actually work (snakes in hibernation in the winter wouldn't actually do what they did there), but the acting and the language were so great. Such a good movie.
you people are persistent in having me remember every single bit of that episode, aren't you?
I had totally managed to wash it from my mind. Now, it's all coming back. *shudder*
the snake scene didn't actually work
I actually laughed at the snakes. I couldn't help it. I mean, Mattie had been through so much shit already, including falling down into the pit (at which point the entire audience gasped as one), and THEN THERE ARE SNAKES. I mean, enough already.
It's horrible in the original. The snakes might have left her alone if she didn't keep
hitting them with that branch!
