Wash: Don't fall asleep now. Sleepiness is weakness of character. Ask anyone. You're acting captain. Know what happens you fall asleep now? Zoe: Jayne slits my throat, and takes over. Wash: That's right. Zoe: And we can't stop it.

3D is great for stuff like Coraline, but Monsters vs. Aliens would have been just as good in 2D and I've heard the after-the-fact 3D process actually made Clash of the Titans more of a crapfest than it would have been otherwise.

That's the other thing.

The application of 3D technology seems completely divorced from its service to the material. Pretty soon, they'll be remaking Jane Austen movies in 3D. "See the parasols coming right AT YOU!!"

Feh.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

you heard they will televise the royal wedding in 3D right?

When I heard that, I just threw up my hands. WTF is the point of that?

Maybe they'll mount shakycams on the Flower Girl and Ringbearer for extra coverage.

I'm glad to see the Beeb rep is 'unenthused' and I suppose I, too, can see the archival benefit, but historians have made due with 2D film since...well, film. So, yeah. Feh.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

historians have made due with 2D film since...well, film. So, yeah. Feh.

Okay, I'm not all over 3D, but you do realise that historians made do with silent and black and white too? It's not exactly the most unassailable of positions.

It's just me being cranky, ita. I know it's not a rational response.

It does make me wonder though, about the evolution of the technology. I can only imagine that VR is the next step. Instead of the movie 'coming out at you', you can be IN it!

But that technology has to be so different from dvd technology that dvds will go the way of the cylinder and the 78rpm recording, right?

So whatever is not migrated to the new technology will be lost...so how does that support archiving?

Don't mind me, I'm having an offa my lawn moment.

eta: Not that I'm supporting the slaying of trees, but newspapers in landfills can be read, like new, decades later. Whereas, ebooks are lost as soon as the technology advances 2 or 3 steps. My Mac G5 'powerpc', I'm lookin' at you!

Also, I can scarcely find a mechanism to listen to the cassettes I still own. Some of that music was never printed on cds. I'm going to lament the loss of The Bonedaddys "Hippie Children" for a very long time.
