Also, I like Memento, NBK (it's not supposed to be deep), and Moulin Rouge (it's not supposed to be deep. Dude, haven't you studied "the finish fetish"? Shiny surfaces.)
Heh, again, for the most part, Hec and I are one. MR was...too ADD for me. You couldn't SEE any of the set design - it was chopped to shreds in Lurmann's editing cuisinart.
Dune...Bram Stoker's Dracula
Neither of these are remotely GOOD movies, and yet I love them for their varied excesses.
Mine is Eye of the Beholder. God, not even Ewan McGregor could save that dreck.
Again, not even REMOTELY a good movie, but so determinedly weird, I enjoyed the hell out of it. See also (Ewan division), Nightwatch.
I love bad movies, when I can watch them with my brother. The quality of the mockery is a thing of beauty.
I found MR a chaotic, noisy, melodramatic mess on my first viewing and didn't like it at all. On my second viewing, it suddenly clicked and I dug it. It was still a chaotic, noisy, melodramatic mess, but it made a goofily enjoyable sense.
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Again, So Pretty! Barely resembles the novel, and dear God, why Keanu as Jonathan Harker? But Gary Oldman as Dracula, Tom Waits as Renfield, and a lot of pretty costumes make up for that.
My low-water mark for Bad Movies was, for many many MANY years, Rhinestone
Good God yes. "Ah can see youh pulse."
And some joke about crabs.
Nightwatch
Good creepy atmosphere.
Rewatched Last Action Hero just this past Christmas, and still enjoyed the heck out of it.
Appaloosa is the most recent movie where I spent the entire time going "WTF is this?". There is a Chevy Chase movie that is pure evil and makes my soul feel stained even thinking about it. Nothing But Trouble or somesuch.
Evil.
The only time I walked out of a film was a midnight showing of Sid and Nancy. The only other time I wanted to walk out of a film was The Road to Wellville. God, that movie stunk to high heaven, and I had treated my mom to a full-price evening showing on my $18K/year salary. I apologized to her as we left the theater.
And, in a separate post to distinguish it from bad films, I just got back from seeing Star Trek.
Oh, my god, was that FUN!!! Although I wouldn't see it again in IMAX--waaayyy too much stuff going on to get that close to the screen. I need some distance next time I see it, and that will be soon.
Chris Pine was excellent as Kirk, Zach Quinto nailed Spock and all of his messy hidden emotions, John Cho and Zoe Saldana were great as Sulu and Uhura, Anton Yelchin was good if annoyingly heavy with the Russian accent as Chekov.
And then there were Simon Pegg (he needs more screen time!!) as Scotty--very funny--and Karl Urban (yummmm...excuse me, what was I saying?) did a perfect Deforest Kelley and still made Bones interesting as a character and not an imitation.
I want the next installment now, please!
dear God, why Keanu as Jonathan Harker?
And Coppola (and at the time, Winona, I would guess) wanted Johnny Depp, GODDAMMIT!!!!! Fucking studios fuck every fucking thing up.
Oh, The Road to Wellville. Good choice for a bad movie. Ugh.
