Zoe: What's that, sir? Mal: Freedom, is what. Zoe: No, I meant what's that? Mal: Oh. Yeah. Just step around it. I think something must've been living in here.

We won’t stop until everyone is gay.

So amyth and I watched Rocknrolla last night as part of our continuing Tom Hardy obsession. What a weird movie. I can't even decide if I liked it or not, really. Guy Ritchie must be so fucking high when he writes those screenplays. Definitely fails the Bechdel test in a major way, but minor yay for no onscreen violence against women?

Handsome Bob is all win, though. My new tag is TH talking about his experience making the film. J/k! Using a different TH quote.

"already on the kiss-cam with Karl Marx"-

I liked it, but not because I understood it...the other Ritchie caper films were better on that count. Wild ride, though. And Piven.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Someone on WX linked to this article about 2010 being the worst movie year EVER, and I just can't take it seriously because it's lauding The Matrix and Jurassic Park in the same breath as The Godfather.

No, it's not a great year, but if you're just looking for Jurassic Park level movies, I think we're doing okay. All you need is visual impact and some breathtaking. It was a fun film, but it wasn't great.

We'll see when the year is done. Was 2009 that good?

I renounce that article and all its works.

More films about the pivotal role of choreography in rescuing the underclass from its own worst instincts.

Hey, fuck you and your classist self, and also? I am looking forward to Step Up 3D.

Also, what was wrong with Iron Man 2?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Was 2009 that good?

It was a great year for animation at least.

It got a little heavy in the "Can Tony get himself back on the right track?" direction, but other than that there were sufficient blow-things-up moment to be worth it. And if Natasha shows up in the next movie, I do hope they recast her, because lord, that woman was painful to watch.

Samuel L. Jackson fulfilled his Badass For All Occassions duties well.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Jurassic Park was at least different. Anyway, I think that article means to talk about the summer, not the year, right? Actual language aside? This has not been a good summer for the movies.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

Not enough RDJ in an undershirt.

Teppy makes a valid point.

We turned on the subtitles about 10 minutes in, and it didn't help that much.

From back a bit:

I saw RocknRolla about a year ago and I found the movie to be very misogynist. I was kind of surprised that I had this reaction because I watch a lot of action movies that aren't exactly feminist movies.

Interesting. Do you remember what pinged you, in particular? The women are largely referred to/cast as as tarts and strippers, but given the subject matter and director I don't find that surprising. And, like I said, at least there is no violence against women onscreen. It's sad, but I find myself thankful when violence against women is not used as cheap character definition/titillation.
