Pretty sure I've seen screencaps of the chess piece. And I'll look again on Saturday!
As for "Moll," that's what I heard, too, and I think
it's not a coincidence. When we first see Mal, she seems to be a double-crossing femme fatale.
Really, she's neither
mal nor moll.
megan, did you at least appreciate that Cobb/DiCaprio used
the French inflection on Philippa
?
So did I. Because Mal is a ridiculous name for a French person.
Well, yes. I couldn't even find anything that it would be short for.
Yeah, "Mal" didn't cross my mind until I got here, and I still had to look it up.
What ita and megan said about Moll/Mal. I thought Moll was cute, and it never occurred to me he was saying Mal.
I thought it was Moll too! But then Americans pronouncing names is a problem for me in general for me. I though Tara in Buffy was Terra for the first year or so.
I'd been assuming Moll the whole movie, but the credits disagreed with me.
Oh, thank god it wasn't just me.
But he pronounces it sort of in the middle of the two languages so I put it down to that.
Plus, his two kids had such British sounding names that at a certain point I began to wonder if she was even supposed to be French.
Oh, so here's another question which may have been answered by the credits but I didn't notice.
Is Michael Caine Cobb's father or Mal's father?
They don't have surnames in IMDB, so that doesn't help.
